SOLD Roman School, 18th century An Architectural Capriccio with a Hexagonal Temple

A particularly charming late eighteenth-century Roman architectural capriccio depicting an elegant hexagonal temple or pavilion set within an imagined landscape. The two-storey structure is articulated with rust-red brick arches, stone dressings and a balustraded opening, its entrance surmounted by a carved armorial crest. A tiled roof crowned by a cross rises against an atmospheric blue and ochre sky, while dark trees and loosely painted terrain frame the building on either side.
The painting belongs to the Italian tradition of architectural fantasy in which observed Roman architecture was combined with imagined or idealised settings. Its unusually intimate scale and highly particular architectural detail give the work the character of both a capriccio and an architectural study.
