A luminous view across Tangier, painted from the celebrated Hotel Villa de France, looking over the city towards the Strait of Gibraltar. Cidoncha depicts the densely layered town beneath a pale blue sky, its whitewashed buildings punctuated by terracotta roofs, palms and luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation.
Painted with loose, confident brushwork, the composition is particularly successful in its handling of light: warm ochres, oranges and greens give the foreground an almost sun-drenched intensity, while the distant city and sea dissolve into softer blues and greys. The elevated viewpoint and immediacy of the handling lend the work the character of a highly accomplished plein-air study.
The Hotel Villa de France has long been associated with artists and writers visiting Tangier and is particularly celebrated for its commanding views across the city.
