Of rectangular form, this finely worked lacquered casket is decorated throughout with lively figural scenes rendered in polychrome and gilt against a deep black ground. The principal panel depicts children at play within a stylised landscape, their animated gestures and bright garments lending warmth and narrative charm to the composition, while the borders are enriched with geometric key-pattern ornament. The surface, softly worn through time, retains a mellow sheen characteristic of export lacquer of the late Qing period. Fitted with a shaped metal clasp to the front, the box combines decorative refinement with practical purpose, embodying the enduring appeal of Chinese lacquerware.
