An Early 20th-Century Turkish Anatolian Geometric Rug

$1,950.00

Turkey, first quarter 20th century. The warm ochre and madder-red field centred by a bold stepped geometric medallion worked in ivory, dark brown and red, surrounded by scattered stylised flowerheads and geometric motifs. The composition is framed by multiple borders of angular leaves, rosettes and repeating geometric devices in red, ochre, ivory and brown, with fringed ends.

The strong, almost architectural drawing and richly varied palette are characteristic of Anatolian village weaving of the period, while the subtle irregularities of the hand-knotted construction and gently aged colours give the rug a particularly individual character.
