An elegant pair of Empire cream-painted and upholstered open armchairs, circa 1815, conceived in the sophisticated Neoclassical taste associated with the celebrated Parisian workshop of Jacob-Desmalter.

Each chair has a rectangular upholstered back within a finely carved and cream-painted frame, the open arms supported by particularly striking winged female herm figures, above a generously upholstered seat. The seat rail is ornamented with carved rosettes, raised on turned and reeded front legs with gently sabred rear legs.

The restrained cream-painted finish beautifully offsets the warm, muted rose upholstery and gives the chairs a remarkably light architectural quality. The sculptural winged supports are the defining feature, lending the pair the strong classical character characteristic of the French Empire period.
