Persia, mid century. The expansive plain ochre field enclosed by a striking polychrome border composed of alternating red, blue, green and ivory compartments, each centred by a small geometric motif, the design outlined throughout in dark brown and finished with fringed ends.
Unusually restrained for a Qashqai weaving, the simplicity of the central field throws particular emphasis on the boldly articulated border. Its strong blocks of colour and almost architectural geometry give the kilim a remarkably modern appearance, while retaining the irregularity and character of traditional handwoven tribal work.
