A Louis XIV brass-studded leather domed carriage trunk, France, circa 1700

The domed lid and front are covered in black leather and densely close-nailed to form stylised flowering urns, interlacing strapwork, scrolling tendrils and foliage, heightened with larger brass-headed studs. The lid has a gilt-metal winged cherub-head hasp above a shaped iron lock escutcheon, and a wrought-iron carrying handle is mounted to each side. The trunk is raised on block feet.

Condition: Wear and losses to the leather consistent with age and use, notably to the lid, exposing the wooden carcass beneath; some studs lacking. Old, sturdy construction with an attractive, even patina.
