An exquisite Second Empire armchair, Mid-19th Century. A refined expression of the Empire style, this walnut armchair combines stately symmetry with richly symbolic ornament. The frame is defined by curved arms and straight obelisk front legs, the armrests mounted with giltwood sphinxes — a striking motif drawn from Greco-Roman and Egyptian antiquity and a hallmark of Napoleonic design. Star details further underscore its imperial associations, while the front legs are set on castors for ease of movement. Upholstered in a golden-yellow corduroy with decorative trim, the chair retains the warmth, grandeur and disciplined elegance that distinguished furniture of the Second Empire period.
