A Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica)

Few natural objects possess the sculptural authority of the coco de mer, the legendary fruit of nature from the Seychelles, whose remarkable form has fascinated travellers, collectors and naturalists for centuries. Revered since the early modern period, when specimens mysteriously washed ashore across the Indian Ocean, the coco de mer was long believed to grow beneath the sea and was treasured as a rarity of almost mythical origin.

This example displays the species’ unmistakable twin-lobed form, its surface worn smooth by time and handling, with subtle ridges and organic striations running across the darkened shell. The sensuous contours and rich patina lend the piece a striking presence, transforming what is fundamentally a botanical specimen into an object of sculptural beauty.
