An unusually decorative late 18th-century Italian commode, the rectangular top above two long drawers retaining their finely cast scrolling gilt-bronze handles and foliate escutcheons. The wooden body is decorated with a wonderfully free, likely later, painted finish imitating richly veined marble, in tones of ivory, grey and pale green, lending the piece a particularly painterly and decorative quality. Raised on four elegant, gently curved legs, its restrained proportions and exuberant decoration make it an exceptionally versatile piece, equally suited to a bedroom, drawing room or entrance hall.
