Of intimate scale and devotional character, this 18th-century Italian tabernacle mirror is richly carved in giltwood, its architectural silhouette crowned by a scrolling broken pediment centred on a stylised shell motif. The uprights are animated with deeply cut acanthus and voluted ornament, resting upon a moulded plinth base that anchors the composition with quiet authority.
The gilding, now beautifully mellowed, reveals layers of warm bole and subtle wear consistent with age, lending the surface a depth and softness unattainable in later reproductions. The original mirror plate, attractively foxed and time-darkened, enhances the atmospheric quality of the piece, favouring mood and patina over clarity of reflection.
Both sculptural and devotional in spirit, the mirror retains the ceremonial presence of its ecclesiastical origins, while lending texture and historic gravitas to a contemporary interior.
