Philip Alexius de László (1869-1937) A Female Nude: Study for Europa Struggling Against Armament

$12,000.00

Philip Alexius de László (1869–1937)
Study for a Symbolic Composition
Charcoal and Sepia Chalk on paper

Note

The female figure at the centre of the present work is shown reclining on her right side, a serpent coiling around her body, her gaze lifted upward towards her raised left arm. De László conceived this dramatic allegory as the principal motif for an ambitious composition intended to symbolise Europe’s struggle against the powers of evil in the aftermath of the Great War of 1914–18. Preparatory studies were executed over a period of years, but the final painting was never completed. The canvas—later reduced—was ultimately destroyed by order of the artist’s Trustees and family in 1947.

The present drawing is a rare surviving record of this unrealised masterpiece. A related charcoal study remains in the collection of a descendant of the artist (The de László Archive Trust, The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869–1937) [online]).
