Seated amongst fragments of ruined masonry beneath broad tropical foliage, the figure is depicted wearing richly coloured Ottoman dress with crimson waistcoat, embroidered sash and curved yataghan at his side. Beyond stretches an atmospheric landscape of desert encampments and distant palms, dissolving into the fading light of dusk.

Painted in the final decades of the nineteenth century, the work belongs to the enduring European fascination with the Ottoman world and the imagined landscapes of the Eastern Mediterranean. Combining elements of costume study, portraiture and romantic fantasy, the composition evokes the richly atmospheric Orientalist paintings collected by Grand Tour travellers throughout the nineteenth century.
