Victorian Button Back Chair Attributed To Gillows

$3,400.00

An elegant Victorian oak button-Back armchair attributed to Gillows, Mid-19th Century. The chair is marked 'GILLOW'. The design, with deep-buttoned back and sides, reflects the firm’s celebrated craftsmanship and refinement, raised on turned and fluted front legs of characteristic precision, with shaped rear supports. Gillows of Lancaster and London were among the foremost cabinetmakers of the 18th and 19th centuries, renowned for their superb quality, inventive designs and discreet stamped marks.
The chair has been newly upholstered in a spectacular chenille stripe fabric by Robert Kime, whose historically resonant patterns are often rooted in antique documents. Here, the bold stripe is perfectly attuned to the period of the piece.
This piece would sit beautifully in a library, study, or bedroom, where its rich upholstery and sculptural presence offer equal measures of comfort and refinement.
